Description
Aiptasia are a type of anemone that can be found in numerous reef aquariums. These anemones possess the ability to sting and inflict harm on nearly any resident of your reef aquarium. Their tentacles can sting corals, leading to their eventual death. They can multiply in your tank through various methods: fission, asexual reproduction via spores, attachment of floating pieces to other surfaces, and regeneration. If the top of the anemone is removed by grazing fish, leaving only the foot, the foot has the ability to regrow.
Similar to other anemones, Aiptasia can relocate themselves. There are instances where multiple Aiptasia occupy the same crevice. In such cases, they tend to compete for food, often by alternating their feeding schedules. Some will emerge during the day to feed, while others will do so at night. If you notice tiny anemones appearing, it indicates that the “mother” Aiptasia has released some spores.
