Jellybean Chalice Corals are a type of Echinophyllia, prized for their vibrant and diverse coloration. They get their name from the striking mix of colours, often resembling a bowl of jellybeans, with shades of bright pink, purple, green, orange, and yellow commonly appearing.

Key Features:

  • Colour: Known for a wide range of vibrant colours, which can intensify under the right lighting.
  • Shape: They typically have a wavy, encrusting, or plating growth form, giving them a unique texture and appearance.
  • Lighting: Medium to low lighting is preferred to bring out their colours, and excessive light may cause bleaching.
  • Flow: Moderate water flow helps keep the coral clean of detritus and allows for optimal health without damaging its fleshy surface.
  • Feeding: While they get most of their energy from photosynthesis via zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae), they benefit from occasional feeding of meaty foods like brine shrimp or coral-specific foods.

Care Level:

Jellybean Chalices are generally considered reasonably easy to care for. They thrive best in stable tank conditions with proper calcium and alkalinity levels for skeletal growth.

Placement:

Because of their encrusting nature, they can grow over rock surfaces or around other corals, so it’s important to give them enough space to expand and avoid aggressive neighbours. Their tentacles can extend during nighttime feeding, which may sting nearby corals.

Jellybean Chalices are a popular choice for hobbyists looking to add a pop of colour to their reef tanks while also enjoying the slow and steady growth of a visually dynamic coral.
